Some are engagement rings only and some come with a wedding band.

But what is this engagement ring and wedding band business anyway?

Over the many years in this business I have come to realize that there is a lot of confusion about the engagement ring wedding ring differences.

What is an engagement ring?
Just to be clear, lets define exactly what an engagement ring is.
An engagement ring is one ring which almost always contains at least one larger “center” diamond. There can be many smaller diamonds along with the center stone or there can be only one stone.


If there were only one single stone, it would be called a solitaire.

A solitaire by definition means “ONE’. and that’s all it means. A lot of people believe that solitaire means round shape diamond, but it does not. A solitaire can be any shape. Round, princess, pear, marquise, emerald, heart or oval to name just a few.

Oh yes, I almost forget…..there’s one other big thing about the engagement ring.. It’s the one ring that a mans presents to the woman of his life as symbol of love and commitment. In other words it’s the “will you marry me” ring.

What is a wedding ring?
A wedding ring is the ring that is slipped onto his and her finger at the wedding ceremony that will symbolize each persons marriage to the other. In most cases this is the ring that will fit next to the engagement ring that she has already be wearing.

Here are 2 examples of rings that we call double ring sets because the wedding band and engagement ring are specifically made to fit next to each other together as a set.

Now, is there always a special ring made to go with each and every engagement ring?
No! there is not. This is because in some cases there is not just 1 ring that works best.
There might be a variety of rings to choose from as well as a custom designed option that has become more popular recently.

Also in some cases….NOT having a wedding band at all has become acceptable for certain styles of rings. Especially for those that are a little wider and have the illusion of being a double ring set.

What is important is having the freedom to choose what you want.

I have seen many more rings used as the engagement and wedding ring than just listed here. In reality, an engagement and wedding can be what ever you want it to be. Its does not have to be diamond, it can be anything that you want to use as your symbol

We have seen and designed many “non traditional” engagement and wedding rings over the years. Anything from using a different center stone other than a diamond to a completely different ring design altogether, based on a personal ideal or cultural reason that does not fit into the above “traditional” ring at all.
