How Tough is a Diamond

How Tough is a Diamond

In the jewelry world, it is commonly understood that diamonds are amongst the hardest gems we have. This means they are incredibly resistant to scratches and abrasions. Diamonds are typically the centerpiece of engagement and wedding rings, giving them adding sentimental value to their monetary one. If you're shopping for a diamond, or diamond engagement ring, you may be wondering: Can diamonds become scratched?

Diamond Hardness & Scratches

Natural diamonds are used in a variety of industries because of their hardness. They are used as the tips of drill bits, for cutting and polishing every day because of their superior rating on the Mohs' scale of mineral hardness. In fact, this mighty gem scores a perfect ten! If you are considering an artificial diamond, you should know they are no less superior in hardness or quality.

The natural hardness of your diamond will protect it from becoming scratched in most cases. However, depending on the setting you choose, and your lifestyle, your diamond may be more susceptible to this type of damage. While raised settings allow lots of light to reflect resulting in more shine, these settings are more likely to result in scratches from activities like house chores, showering, working outside, or exercising.

Protecting Your Diamond

-Remove your rings before any activity in which you may hit them against solid objects.

-If you have loose diamonds and gemstones, do not store them together. This will help avoid the gems tumbling together in your jewelry box and getting scratched.

-Clean items you wear frequently with a soft bristle toothbrush, warm water, and dish soap. Perform a visual inspection on your own and stop wearing them if you suspect damage.

-Schedule, and keep, yearly appointments for your jeweler to have your diamonds cleaned and inspected.

We love creating custom jewelry to help our customers make memories, and pieces, that will last a lifetime.

Regardless of the diamond, or setting that you choose, you can feel confident your jewelry from Ballard & Ballard Fine Jewelers will sparkle scratch-free with the proper care!
