“She is more precious than rubies & nothing you desire can compare to her.” -Unknown

Happy July! We are back to discuss the birthstone of July, the Ruby! We are going to be breaking down the history and lore behind the precious stone that made movie history.

Let's click our heels three times and dream a ruby red dream!

Signs of Peace

Dating back to ancient times, the ruby is mentioned many times in the Bible, and has adorned warriors for centuries with the thought that they bring peace and a promise of wisdom to those who carry them into battle.

Additionally, they are seen as a symbol of love, passion, and power. The wonders of earth are thought to be at play for this shining red gem is a geological miracle.

Formation

During formation rubies are in essence a Corundum, or a colorless stone when pure. When Chromium is introduced the ruby gets it’s bright red appearance. Similarly, when Titanium & Iron are added to Corundum you get a bright blue sapphire, but that is for another story.

The conditions needed to create rubies is so rare that today it is thought to be one of the most precious gems in existence.

Even the ancients understood this concept, leaving rubies for those of great royalty or those going into battle.

Variants

When it comes to rubies, it is not a one shade fits all formula. Part of the reason rubies are so sought after are the hues they come in. From orange and red sunset hues, all the way to red purple mystical hues, Rubies are all about the color.

Rubies today are more well known for their part in getting Dorothy home from Oz. Funny enough, if someone were to create a pair of shoes covered in rubies we doubt that they would just be willing to give them away.

From ancient times to modern movies, the ruby is a showstopping gem sought all around the world for their vibrance and one of a kind hues. It is befitting that it represents those who were born in the month of July.
