“The summer night is like a perfection of thought.” -Wallance Stevens
As the first half of 2021 comes to an end we are welcomed by the summer air & the longer days.
We welcome June babies as the next group to learn the origins & history of their birthstone, the stunning gem that is Alexandrite.

Dating back to the times of Imperial Russia in the 19th century, Alexandrite was named after the Czar of Russia at the time of its discovery, Alexander 2. As one of it’s many properties is to change it’s hue under different lighting conditions Alexandrite was deemed the official stone of the Russian Tsardom.

It’s popularity in Russia exploded & the gem was often thought to bring good luck & good wealth to those who wear it. Some even go as far to say that it is the gem of romance, and shall bring a reminder that some things can change as we observe them.
Additionally, Alexandrite is thought to bring with it natural healing powers to heal long term illnesses & restore internal energy. It can even be seen as a way to heal one’s emotional state naturally, giving the user the emotional well being & hope.

As the 19th century gave way to the 20th the supply of Alexandrite in Russia dried up, and interest shrunk until a new supply was found in the late 1980’s in Brazil. To this day, top tier natural Alexandrite is deemed rarer than diamonds, and because of this, is almost entirely unobtainable by the general public.
In today’s world most examples of Alexandrite in the wild are lower quality gems that circulate through the public. Even 200 years after it’s discovery the world is still truly dazzled by it’s breathtaking ability to change shades, and is thought to be the present one gives on their 55th wedding anniversary.

Those born in the month of June may just have it destined to be connected to one of the rarest, and most sought after gemstones across the globe. It truly is a reminder that not everything in this world is exactly how we preserve it to be.
