Fall in Love with Amethyst

February is the month of love! Ironic isn't it that the birthstone of those born in the month of February isn't actually the shining red ruby? No, in fact, the title of February birthstone is actually given to the dazzling, and often regal, Amethyst.

Check out some interesting history & lore behind the stone that has adorned countless royals throughout history.

Amethyst is a stone known by many, especially in ancient times. It has several biblical references & was often set in rings worn by Bishops. The unique purple shine of Amethyst was seen as a rarity & for a massive part of history was appraised much higher than traditional diamonds.

There are many stories dating back to ancient times that explain how the stone got its brilliant purple shade. Stories of Greek gods that spilled red wine onto quartz & goblets that prevented the user from getting drunk. As history progressed, so did the tales of its origin.

In medieval times, many believed that the purple stone held mystic powers that could aid its owner in battle, help a hunter find game, and even heal battle wounds. It often would bring forth the highest forms of human aspiration.

As the renaissance began Amethyst transitioned to a stone more sought after by royalty for its purple hue, In these times the color purple was seen as a “royal” color usually reserved for those of the royal family & lineage.

As the centuries passed many passed down the thought that Amethyst brings with it the powers to heal illnesses & aid its owner in mental health. The Chinese often believed wearing the stone to bed helped prevent bad dreams

In today’s modern times Amethyst has become an absolutely stunning gemstone that can be paired with several other stones to create a unique & one of a kind piece of eye catching jewelry.

Do you have an Amethyst piece or is it your birthstone? We’d love to hear any Amethyst stories our customers may have. If you have a story or piece you would like to share with us email Landon at landon@ballardgem.com & he’d be happy to share it to our audience.
