“The Sapphire stone sits highest on the throne.” -Sapphire Khalilah

Welcome back to our monthly birthstone history and breakdown, we are here again to talk about the ocean-like stone connected to those who are born in the month of September, the Sapphire.

The sapphire is a shining, bold, and blue stone usually mentioned in the same breath as Ruby or Emerald, colored stones that are known for their unique color schemes.

HISTORY

Being derived from both Greek & Latin roots meaning “blue” this stone is known for its connection to the planet Saturn. “Sapphire” can roughly translate to, “Door to the planet Saturn” in several languages.

In ancient times those of royalty in Persia believed the sky was painted blue to mimic the color of sapphires. They were even seen as holy stones of the Catholic church, believing that the ten commandments were originally written on Sapphire.

In our more modern time, the sapphire is most known for being the stone Prince Charles gave in an engagement ring to Lady Diana Spencer.
If you want to visit one of the largest sapphires today, you can do so by going to the Museum of Natural History in New York where they have one on display that’s a whopping 563 Carats!

MYSTICAL POWERS

Following its blue hue, the sapphire has long since been seen as the gem of Heaven, allowing owners powers of truth, good health, and inner peace & beauty.

In ancient Persia sapphires were often ground up and used in many medicines to help heal ailments, and in Russia they were thought to be an antidote to poison.

Being the gem of heaven sapphire was thought to word off evil sorcery and banish evil spirits back to their senders. It was frequently used as a protective gemstone by the wearers.

SCIENTIFIC PROPERTIES

Sapphires are classified as Corundum, the same oxide as Rubies, where the biggest differences between the 2 are the colors. Both Rubies and Sapphires are prized for their hardness, being only one level below a Diamond.

The most common Sapphires can be found under 2 Carats but finding one between 5 and 10 Carats is seen as nearly impossible today. Sapphires can also come in slightly different hues of violet, pink, orange, and yellow depending on their inner crystal structure.

From ancient stone tablets to beautiful sky paintings. The Sapphire is no dull gemstone throughout history, and those born in the month of September are forever connected to the gemstone of heaven.
