What are “Diamond Alternatives” ?
The term Diamond Alternative simply refers to any alternative stone used for an engagement or wedding ring. Some of the more popular stones include: Morganize, Moissanite, Cubic Zirconia, and White Sapphire.
While those are the most common, any type of gemstone can be a Diamond Alternative, and the sky's the limit!
Pros of Diamond Alternatives
- Price: Most of these alternative stones will wind up being a lot cheaper than an Earth mined diamond of a similar size.
- Unique Factor: For some, having a stone that stands out from the pack is more than enough for them.
- More Consistent: Because of the manufacturing process these gemstones will be more consistent in their looks across the board.
Cons of Diamond Alternatives
- Durability: At the end of the day, a diamond is going to be stronger than any of these alternative stones, and will hold its quality a lot longer. Alternative stones can chip and break a lot easier over time.
- A Diamond is a Diamond: For some, the original is the only way to go. It’s a classic for a reason.
- Dullness: These alternative stones do tend to dull their shine a lot quicker compared to their natural diamond counterparts when dirty.
In Summary
The trend of finding a Diamond Alternative for an engagement or wedding ring is based on these gemstones being marketed as, “Just as strong” or, “Just as unique” as a traditional diamond.
While there’s some truth in every statement, there’s no gemstone as strong or as unique as an Earth Mined, or Lab Grown Diamond. (More on that later)
