What Is A CVD diamond?

What Is A CVD diamond?

Guy Ballard
A CVD diamond is basically a synthetic, man-made diamond that is created by scientists. This process is a lot quicker and easier than the process that finding a real diamond entails. But what exactly is it and how does it compare to a real diamond?

What Are CVD Diamonds?

CVD stands for chemical vapor deposition and refers to the process by which the diamond is created. First, a diamond seed is placed inside a vacuum chamber that gets filled with carbon-rich gasses. The chamber is heated to almost 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of the high heat, tiny carbon pieces get released which then layer themselves onto the diamond seed. This is how a CVD diamond is created.

What Is The Difference Between CVD And A Natural Diamond

CVD diamonds are very similar to natural diamonds. They have the same structure and chemical properties as natural diamonds do. They can even be shaped and polished to look exactly like a natural diamond. The main difference, in this case, is that CVD diamonds are man-made, while natural diamonds are naturally made.

Are CVD Diamonds Quality Diamonds?

CVD diamonds still offer the same quality as natural diamonds, only they can do it at a much lower price. All gems, both natural and CVD, undergo value evaluations under the four C’s categories. The four different categories help people understand what their value is worth. The four c’s that are evaluated are the following:

Cut
Color
Clarity
Carat Weight

After effectively undergoing a four C’s evaluation, all gems, including CVD diamonds receive a grading report. This is what determines the quality of the diamond itself.

What Are The Benefits Of Choosing CVD

As previously mentioned, CVD diamonds are much more affordable than natural diamonds. This makes it easier for consumers to purchase a ring that they enjoy without going over budget and breaking the bank. Additionally, it is possible to find CVD diamonds with a high grading score on the 4C evaluation. If a CVD diamond ends up with a high score in clarity and color, it will likely score higher than a natural diamond with a lower score, and you will still get it at a more reasonable price.

Additionally, when you purchase a CVD diamond you know exactly where that diamond came from. The diamond industry has a lot of unknown topics and people feel more comfortable spending money on something that they are well informed about.
