What Is An Old Mine Cut Diamond?

What Is An Old Mine Cut Diamond?

Have you ever wondered what makes vintage rings so special? Part of what makes them unique is the fact that they had different cuts than the ones you typically see today. One of those different cuts is the old mine cut, which consists of a square shape with curved edges.

What Proportions Does An Old Mine Cut Diamond Have?

Old mine cut diamonds have different proportions than the diamonds that you see today. Even without thoroughly examining the diamond, you can clearly see the difference as soon as you look at an old mine-cut diamond.

They have a higher crown and larger facets than diamonds that you see today, making them rather bulky. But because these beautiful diamonds were cut by hand, the proportions may not be even and these diamonds often have shapes that are asymmetrical.

Old Mine Cut Diamonds Are Extremely Rare

Diamond-cut diamonds were most commonly found in the 18th and 19th centuries, making them a rare find! If you are in fact set on getting your hands on an old mine-cut diamond, you might have some work cut out for you.

Try hitting antique shops, as you might have some luck finding a diamond you like in one of these places. Keep in mind that because they are so rare, the price you pay for them might be quite hefty as well.

Why Don’t Old Mine Cut Diamonds Shine?

Old mine-cut diamonds were cut during entirely different times, meaning that their end foal was not to shine under fluorescent lights but candlelight instead. Because of this, they are much taller than you would expect a diamond to be, making it hard for fluorescent light to reflect off of them. Rather than getting a shiny light, you will see rainbow flashes reflected off of old mine-cut diamonds so keep that in mind about this rare stone.

Do You Love The Mine Cut Diamond But Dislike The Ring?

A lot of old mine-cut diamonds have been handed down from generation to generation. You might have one in your family but because of the ring it is sitting in, it might not seem as appealing to you.

Keep in mind that you can have an experienced jeweler remove the diamond and place it on a ring that you actually love. Not only would you end up with a rare piece of jewelry but also one that is full of history so definitely consider that before you say no to your grandma’s antique old mine-cut diamond!
